Picking out pregnancy-safe skincare can seem complicated. I have an entire page on pregnancy beauty, dedicated to which skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or IVF.
Today is about the best pregnancy and lactation-safe sunscreens for melasma and hyperpigmentation.
In a previous post, I discussed the causes of melasma in pregnancy and its prevention, the risk factors and how to mitigate them, the role of light from your devices, how to choose the right sunscreen specific to pregnancy, the correct amount to be applied, and the application methods.
To reiterate, the use of a tinted (iron oxide) broad-spectrum sunscreen of minimum SPF 30 is a priority and an essential step in the management of melasma.
No amount of other lotions and potions you use will be of benefit unless combined with this.
Pointers to how this list is constructed
- All the sunscreen recommendations here are 100% mineral-based (Zinc oxide is always included) with a minimum SPF of 30.
All are reef safe, too! - I have not included mineral sunscreens that are predominantly or exclusively titanium dioxide-based because it does not offer full-spectrum protection by themselves.

- All are tinted with iron oxides, which are effective against visible light, which is incriminated in hyperpigmentation. A common source of visible light? LED screens like your laptop and phone.
- This list does not include any product that has both mineral & chemical sunscreens, as the latter is not to be used in pregnancy.
- The list has both nano and non-nano zinc oxide formulations.
- I have excluded spray, stick, and powder formulations from this list as it leads to inadequate coverage, esp. with powder, & there is a risk of inhalation-related issues with spray devices.
- This list is specifically tailored to individuals who are pregnant or lactating, so I have eliminated ingredients that are unsafe to use during such life events. This makes a much shorter list than what would be if one were not.
- To build your own list and know which ingredients should be eliminated during such life events, kindly go through the following posts:
As always, all my pregnancy recommendations (at the time of writing) are free of:
- Parabens
- Phthalates
- Triclosan
- Benzophenone 3 (also known as oxybenzone)
(All the above four are endocrine disruptors. They interfere with the normal functioning of the endocrine system and the reproductive and other biological processes regulated by it.) - Added fragrance
(a rich source of no.2 and a skin irritant, especially in pregnancy when, due to hormonal changes, skin can be more sensitive) - Formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasers
Reminder: Companies change their formulas frequently, and the ingredient list may vary by country. Hence, always check the ingredient list before using any product.
