Picking out pregnancy-safe skincare can seem complicated. I have an entire page on pregnancy beauty, dedicated to which skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or IVF.

Today is about pregnancy-safe tanning lotions.

In a previous blog, I wrote about the safety profile of sunless tanners in pregnancy.
Are spray tans safe while pregnant?

To surmise, yes, they are safe to use by themselves.
Using a pregnancy-safe sunless tanner, you can get the summer glow without sun exposure.

However, reading the ingredients label carefully is essential to eliminate other chemicals or additives that may be unsafe for pregnancy.

In this post, I recommend pregnancy-safe tanning lotions and brands.

As always, all my pregnancy recommendations (at the time of writing) are free of:

  1. Parabens
  2. Phthalates
  3. Triclosan
  4. Benzophenone 3 (also known as oxybenzone).
All the above four are endocrine disruptors. They interfere with the normal functioning of the endocrine system and the reproductive and other biological processes regulated by it.
  5. Added fragrance or perfume. (a rich source of no.2 and a skin irritant esp in pregnancy, when, due to hormonal changes, skin can become more sensitive)
  6. Formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasers

Reminder: Companies change their formulas frequently, and the ingredient list may vary by country. Hence, always check the ingredient list before determining if the product is a pregnancy-safe tanning lotion.

Note:

  • Never start a treatment regimen on your own. Always consult with your treating physician.
  • Some brands or products market themselves as pregnancy-safe. However, it is essential to note that neither the FDA nor any government agency has certified them as such.

Building your list is easy!
To know which ingredients should be eliminated during such life events, you can go through the following posts:

This list has been challenging to compile as most of the brands or products I reviewed have added fragrance, which I assume is from artificial sources, as they do not say they are naturally derived or phthalate-free. I would not label a product with phthalates as a pregnancy-safe self-tanner.

As a subscriber to phthalate-free skincare products, I actively avoid anything without a phthalate-free label or with a non-natural fragrance source.

If you are struggling with trying to conceive or undergoing fertility treatment, it is advisable to reduce your exposure to phthalates as they can impact your chances of success- Reducing Phthalate Exposure for Improved IVF Outcomes: A Personal Journey and Practical Guide.

Some of the products or brands here have added fragrances labeled phthalate-free.
