Navigating pregnancy-safe skincare can be complicated, but as a medical doctor with a focus on cosmetic ingredient safety, I’ve simplified the search for you.  Visit my Skincare During Pregnancy – Begin Here guide for a full index of ingredient safety reviews, pregnancy and IVF-safe recommendations, and doctor-vetted product guides.

In a previous blog post, I wrote about the health issues related to fertility with perfumes, how I stopped using them once I started my IVF process, and what to look out for in perfumes for a pregnant mother.
I will link that blog here:
Guide to IVF and Pregnancy-Safe Phthalate & Paraben Free Perfumes.

To recap:

  • Parabens in perfumes serve as preservatives that inhibit the growth of harmful organisms, such as bacteria and fungi.
  • Phthalates are used as ‘fixatives’ and help the fragrance last longer and give it an even, consistent scent.
  • Buying an expensive perfume or one from a luxury brand does not necessarily mean it is phthalate- or paraben-free, or safe for a pregnant mother.
  • Not all clean fragrances are made from natural sources. There are two main categories of clean perfumes: one made from 100% natural ingredients and the other that combines synthetic and natural ingredients.

Reminder: Before you buy what appears to be pregnancy-safe perfume, note that companies frequently change their formulas, and ingredient lists may vary by country.  Furthermore, companies are legally permitted not to disclose the full ingredient list, citing intellectual property rights in the formula. Hence, always check the ingredient list and the company website of the pregnancy-safe perfume for more details.
